We finally made the decision in December to cut Zugaro. It was not a difficult decision to make, it was just a matter of timing. I always maintained that if him being kept entire would interfere with his ridden career, he would be gelded as he was bought as a potential Grand Prix horse, not as a breeding stallion.
After covering in 2009 his undercarriage had become very large and it was beginning to hinder his movement. We already have two of our own mares carrying his prodgeny so we didnt feel there was any great benefit in keeping him entire. During the breeding season, so much training time was lost travelling up and down the road to stud and the costs involved were really adding up. I have always believed that stallions should only be kept entire if there are going to be used for breeding purposes. If the operation didnt take place now, the risks involved with the castration increased and we couldnt afford to leave it any longer.
I am glad to report that he is now fully recovered and im really looking forward to a competitive and successful 2010!
